Greenville deputies are looking for a thief they say stole from people while they were working out. The thefts happened at Z-X Fitness, formerly Peak Fitness, on Wade Hampton Boulevard January 6th. Deputies say a man slipped past gym security, and looted the locker room, stealing credit cards. Word of the crime travelled fast at the gym. "I thought, oh my heavens," says member Lola Amcher. "I heard they bought gas, went to Walmart, and all kinds of places!"
According the reports, the thief took the cards and used them at several local businesses. "These individuals, they work around the system," says Deputy Matt Armstrong with the Greenville Sheriff's Office. "They know what kind of businesses to target, or vehicles to target. They acquire the cards, and they they go use them right away before the victim cancels the card."
Surveillance cameras did catch a good shot of the thief, but not before ripping off at least three victims. The crime is making members extra cautious. "I don't bring anything in the gym, except maybe my keys and my sweatshirt, and I'll always keep my belongings with me," says Emily Broere. "That's the smartest thing to do."
Deputies say that's a good idea, warning people to be on guard. They're still looking for more victims. "Never get into a comfort zone," says Armstrong. "Always secure your valuables."
