Hundreds of people have turned out to pay their final respects to a fallen soldier from Greenville.
Funeral services for Pvt. First Class Geoffrey Whitsitt were held Saturday morning at North Hills Community Church in Taylors. Hundreds of people turned out to attend the service, which lasted nearly two hours, and pay tribute to the 21-year old graduate of Greenville Tech Charter High School. Hundreds more lined the streets along Wade Hampton Blvd. to salute him, as ladder trucks from local Fire Departments flew American flags as the processional passed down to his final resting place at Woodlawn Cemetery.
'We are here to pay our respects," said Lilly Hinson, a former classmate of Whitsitt. "And remember a hero."
Friends and family say it was Whitsitt's dream to serve his country.
"He was amazing and selfless and very brave and everybody that knew him wanted to be his friend," Kelsey Donald said about her classmate. "That was his life. That was what he was concerned with and that's what he loved doing," she said.
Whitsitt's body returned to Greenville Thursday to a hero's welcome. People lined the streets to honor him as the processional routed from Stevens Aviation at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport through Greer and to the funeral home.
Whitsitt died earlier this month when the Humvee he was driving struck a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.
Whitsitt would have turned 22 years old on February 5th.
