A flood advisory has been posted for citizens along the Swannanoa River in the city of Asheville until Monday afternoon.
The advisory was posted due to heavy rainfall in area and it is expected that the river will rise to near 11.5 feet sometime after midnight Monday morning. The Asheville City Fire and Rescue Department says that water in this area, near Biltmore and Garfield Street, will be able to reach businesses and residences when the river reaches that level.
Asheville Fire and Rescue says that citizens are urged to take precautions in the area and around flooded radways. Children should be kept away from drainage areas and culverts and caution is urged when walking near river banks.
"Most flood fatalities are the result of citizens driving into flooded streets," said Fire Chief, Scott Burnette, "We want to remind drivers to avoid roadways covered with water."
Residents are urged to call 9-1-1 to report flooding or high water in the area.
The upstate of South Carolina and mountains of western North Carolina remain under a Flash Flood Watch throughout tonight.
