The rough job market is forcing people to think out-of-the-box when trying to get their foot in the door.
in the past you might have over-looked temporary jobs, but now experts believe they might be a great strategy to landing a full time job.
When Diana Galvin lost her job last April she searched for full time work but could only find a temporary job as a book keeper for Conrad and Company CPA's in Spartanburg.
“I didn't treat it just as, you know, I'm only here for a short time, I was concerned about it," said Galvin.
It's that attitude that caught the eye of her employer. Two months later she was offered a full time accounting job.
The national temporary staffing firm Accountemps says it's finding more and more companies are turning part time positions into full time jobs. They say temp workers who excel are the first to be considered when a spot opens.
Accountemps recommends the following:
- Tap into staffing firms specializing in your field
- Let them know your goals of getting full time work
- Bring the same intensity to your part-time job as you would to a fulltime one
- Follow office protocol and don't ruffle feathers
- And let your personality shine.
And even if temp work doesn't parlay into a full time job at the same company, James Taylor with the staffing firm Robert Half International says it shows other employers a lot about your work ethic.
"The biggest thing that it does is it can help you to remove long gaps of unemployment on your work history," said Taylor.
Galvin's whose still supporting her teenage daughter has this advice?
“Don’t go poor pitiful me, I've lost a job, I'm out walking the streets. You need to have the positive attitude,” said Galvin.
At a time when it's sink or swim, It's that kind of thinking that helped Gavin stay afloat, just when her employer was testing the water.
