LODGE, S.C. (AP) - Three people have been killed and six people hurt when a van collided with a tractor trailer truck in rural South Carolina.

Several media outlets report the accident happened shortly after 7 a.m. Wednesday near the Colleton County community of Lodge in the eastern part of the state.

The names of the victims have not been released.

Barry McRoy with Colleton County Fire and Rescue says four of the injured were in critical condition. McRoy says three of them were flown to area hospitals.

The tractor trailer was carrying wood chips and flipped over, spilling its load. The driver suffered a broken leg.

The Highway Patrol is investigating.
