When it came to the white stuff, there is fun to be had, if you have the right equipment to enjoy the ride. News Channel 7 set out to cover the lighter side of winter weather. With visions of spring break right around the corner (bathing suits hanging in the store window), we are reminded that it's still the dead of winter (as photographer pans from bathing suits to sled, just below).
The hot tickets at Sherman's Sports and Army store in Hendersonville? Winter bling. Ski bibs, gloves, thermal underwear and handwarmers were all in demand, as sleds slid off the shelves. It's all about preparation, as Polk County EMS worker Spring Bishop would tell you, as she demonstrates how Yax Trax help them in the snow. "We have these we can use if we need to get out and walk up steep hills or anything like that. We can just put them on our shoes, and they help reduce the risk of injury and fall." They are rubber netting. Some brands, like the version we found at Sherman's have small spikes in them to give you traction. It's thing kind of traction our own Chris Cato could have used while covering the winter weather last year when he wiped out on the ice.
No fear for third grader William Green who sat patiently in class all morning waiting for that moment, "When they said we were going to have an early dismissal, they also said that we were not allowed to cheer when she says this," said William, very seriously, as big brother Philip's dreams for this weekend, "pretty much non-stop sledding," became a reality when the snow began to fall Friday afternoon.
Just one word to describe it says Philip. "Suh-weet."
