Two – of 10 – defendants in an IRS fraud case were sentenced Monday, according to the US Attorney’s Office.
The case involved tax preparers in Spartanburg, Forest City, N.C., and Bolings Springs, S.C.
The businesses, according to the release, are Seguros Internacionales and Poz Servicios Para Hispanos.
The two preparers filed more than 10,000 income tax returns claiming more than $22 million in refunds. The IRS paid out about $13 million in refunds before they realized the returns were frauds.
At least 20 people were involved in the fraud, a release states.
Eight other defendants involved in the scheme had been sentenced on June 16, 2010. Following is a summary of each sentence handed down to date:

Sentenced by Judge Henry Floyd in Spartanburg, South Carolina:
Juan Manuel Galban-Ortega, age 23. Seven months incarceration and restitution of $7,500.00.
Rodolfo Magana-Escoto, age 27. Seven months incarceration and restitution of $115,000.00.
Sentenced by Judge Henry Herlong in Greenville, South Carolina:
Daniel Chavero-Ramirez, age 20. Seven months incarceration and restitution of $5354.00.
Jose de Jesus Magano-Escoto, age 33. Eighteen months incarceration and restitution of $179,908.00.
Sentenced by Senior Judge G. Ross Anderson in Anderson, South Carolina:
Edgar Carrillo-Borjas, age 34. Twenty-four months incarceration and restitution of $473,818.00.
David Hernandez-Juarez, age 34. Fifteen months incarceration and restitution of $137,527.00.
Maribel Juan-Orozco, age 31. Twelve months incarceration and restitution of $150,000.00.
Carlos Carrillo-Rodriquez, age 27. Twelve months incarceration and restitution of $50,986.00

Sentenced by Senior Judge G. Ross Anderson in Anderson, South Carolina:
Ariano Canseco-Orozco, age 20. Eighteen months incarceration and restitution of $382,500.00.
Omar Maldonada-Cardenas, age 27. Forty six months incarceration and restitution of $1,200,000.00.
Mr. Nettles stated that the sentences imposed by the Court reflect the amount of involvement each defendant had in the fraud as well as each having no criminal record and cooperating fully in this ongoing investigation. Mr. Nettles added that Seguros Internacionales and Poz Servicios Para Hispanos have been shut down.
This case is being investigated by agents from the Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation, the United States Postal Inspection Service, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. AUSA David Stephens is assigned to the prosecution.
