Two people were injured in a two vehicle accident on Interstate 26 in Polk County that left traffic backed up for miles late Wednesday night.
The accident happened at mile marker 62 in the westbound lane, just before the Saluda exit. The North Carolina Highway Patrol said a dump truck loaded with gravel overturned and spilled its load onto the interstate before a 18-wheeler struck the dump truck.
A man who came upon the accident just after it happened told News Channel 7 that he saw the 18 wheeler crash into the railing and when it came off, smoke was pouring out.
"We didn't even see the other rig up there because it was so dark," the eyewitness told News Channel 7. "Which was the dump truck, that had turned over first. It was a mess of cars coming to a stop, which was a good thing because it could have caused some serious damage to alot of folks."
The driver of the 18-wheeler was ticketed for failing to reduce speed. Both drivers were treated for minor injuries.
