Multiple fire departments responded to a house fire in the Hampton Heights Historic District in Spartanburg Friday. Fire damaged the Arthur Irwin home at 269 West Hampton Avenue.
Homeowner Jim Newcome told News Channel 7 painters were using heated equipment to remove paint at the home and that is what started the fire.
The following information about the home is the most recently posted at hamptonhts.com:
The second of the Irwin homes, this house was the long-time residence of Arthur irwin, a pharmacist, and his sister Mary Irwin. The carriage stone is still in place in front of the house. The kitchen was separated from the main body of the house, apparently by a breezeway, which was later enclosed. After Arthur Irwin's death in 1925, Mary Irwin continued to live here until her death in 1934. In 1935 the house passed to Anne Page Irwin, widow of William Pinckney Irwin II. She continued to live here until her death in the mid 1980s, when the house was purchased by Jim Newcome and Vivian B. Fisher.
