Leaders from about two dozen Asheville religious congregations came together Thursday morning to show their support for proposed same-sex benefits for gay city employees.
The city recently passed a measure paving the way for the benefits.
The group had representatives from various congregations in the city: From Christianity to Judaism to Wiccans.
They said partners' benefits are basic civil rights for same-sex couples.
One religious leader in the city doesn’t think the benefits should be offered.
Pastor Keith Ogden also said gay and lesbian relationships aren’t right and Christians have to stand up for what’s right.
Ogden of Hill Street Baptist Church said gays and lesbians have come out of the closet and Christians have gone into it. He said he wants Christians to come out and take a stand.
The faith leaders who spoke up in support of same sex benefits Thursday are hoping other religious leaders will join in support.
