More than 120 million U.S. Census forms begin arriving in mailboxes around the country Monday. The government's population count happens once very decade. It will be used to distribute $400 billion in federal aid.
The Census directly impacts the amount of funding which goes to schools with the highest student concentration of poverty, as well as English as a Second Language programs; so Laurens School District 55 is partnering with the U.S. Census Bureau to reach parents and educate them about the importance of those ten questions on the form.
Director of Administrative Services Mary Fortune says Laurens County has changed very much since the last census was taken in 2000. She says, “We need that funding to be able to support the programs we need to have in our schools to better educate our student population." The district is sending home letters, making calls, and even had a "Let's Be Counted" Census party in an effort to encourage parents and the entire community to be counted.
