A teacher in Western North Carolina is suspended after he wrote "loser" on a student's paper -more than once. What kind of an impact can calling a student a loser have on him or her? It happened at Enka Middle School on Asbury Road in Candler, North Carolina in Buncombe County.
After more than 12 years of teaching at the school Rex Roland is off the job and suspended without pay. His school district says he must undergo training in professional and ethical behavior, before he comes back. The disciplinary action follows a parent's complaint that Roland wrote the word "loser" on her daughter's assignment in November and again a few weeks ago.
When the news broke, parent Sarah Pressley said, “My reaction totally is that he is totally just kidding. It is a joke that he and the kids play back and forth with each other. For years this has gone on."
However, family counselor Robin Anderson what some students might slough off, could have a negative impact on others - especially on a student who has other issues, even if the comment wasn't intended to be malicious. "It affects their academics horribly… What happens is that they become disenfranchised. They don't feel school is a good place for them. They don't feel like they belong."
News Channel 7 tried to speak to Roland at his home Tuesday. He said he had no comment.
