Funeral services for a Spartanburg soldier who was missing in Vietnam for over 40 years have finally been planned, according to a report from our coverage partners at the Spartanburg Herald-Journal.
U.S. Army Spc. Thomas Rice Jr. will be buried April 9 at Arlington National Cemetery, along with three of his fellow officers, the newspaper reports.
Rice, 23, was on a mission in South Vietnam when the helicopter he was in with three other soldiers went missing on December 28, 1965. He was legally declared killed in action on December 29, 1966.
The remains of Rice and the three other soldiers were discovered last year and identified. The remains were discovered in a jungle that hampered search efforts for over 40 years. A memorial service with full military honors for Rice was held last September at J.W. Woodward Funeral Home in Spartanburg.
