Bond has been set at $50,000 for a Greer man accused of trying to sexually assault a woman in a public elevator. The bond hearing took place at 6:00 a.m. Tuesday in Spartanburg.
Jimmy E. Henderson Jr. turned himself in at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center Monday evening, according to hospital officials. If he posts bond, he will be under house arrest.
According to Spartanburg Public Safety, the incident occurred around 3:00 pm at the Spartanburg Surgery Center off Serpentine Drive. A woman was inside a public elevator with a crowd of people, including Henderson. Several people left, and the victim was left alone with the suspect. "As soon as the doors closed, he started trying to get close to her, and started trying to touch her," says Lt. Ron Cantrell with Spartanburg Public Safety. "She successfully fought him off, and when the elevator doors opened on the 5th floor, she was able to escape."
The news shocked employees and patients in the area. "You just never know," says Kearston Cunningham. "This road and area is very busy. It's hard to believe somebody would go that far."
The victim was able to identify Henderson out of a photo lineup. He is charged with criminal sexual conduct 3rd degree. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.
According to News Channel 7's coverage partners at the Herald Journal, Jimmy Henderson Junior was accused of slapping a woman's buttocks outside a Greer BI-LO and grabbing a waitress at a Waffle House in Duncan last year. To read more on this story, click here.
