Former Greenville High School football coach James C. Sosebee has been charged with illegally accessing the email of the school’s principal during his employment.
Sosebee was arrested this past weekend in North Carolina and charged with violation of the computer crime act second degree by the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.
He was released from the Greenville County Detention Center on bond. The charge is a misdemeanor and carries a maximum prison sentence of one year.
The sheriff’s office says Sosebee unlawfully accessed the email of Principal J.F. Lucas between May 1, 2008 and March 3, 2009. The investigation was launched on April 12 of this year after a request by the Greenville County School District Information Security Administrator.
Sosebee resigned from his job in April 2009 after being named as the head football coach four years earlier. School district spokesman Oby Lyles said it was a “personnel issue” at the time and gave no details of the resignation.
Sosebee is currently the assistant football coach at Chase High School in Forest City, North Carolina according to the Rutherford County Schools Superintendent.
Dr. Janet Mason, Superintendent, tells News Channel 7 that the matter is being investigated as a personell issue. She says she was made aware of the situation by law enforcement on Friday.
Sosebee is still employed by the school district, and has not received any suspension related to this incident.
The arrest warrant says Sosebee gained access to the school principal’s email and transferred emails to his own computer.
Sosebee was arrested by the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office to face the charge in South Carolina.
Sosebee was named 2008 AAA Region Coach of the Year prior to stepping down from the job after seven years as a Greenville High School employee.
Editor's note: Originally it was reported that Sosebee is the head football coach at Chase High. New information obtained by a News Channel 7 reporter showed that he was the assistant coach. The reference has been replaced.
