Police: Asheville Teen Driver Distracted By Text Before Deadly Accident

Asheville Police believe the teenager who died in a crash on May 10 was trying to retrieve a text message from her cell phone seconds before a head-on crash. 

Ashley Johnson, 16, was traveling 52mph in a 45mph zone when the accident happened on Long shoals Road according to Traffic Safety Unit investigators. 

Johnson’s car crossed the center line and struck a Ford truck. The driver of the truck was injured, but will recover. 

No charges will be filed.

A Buncombe County teen died at Mission Hospital as a result of injuries in a traffic accident Tuesday, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Asheville Police continue to investigate the accident that occurred on Long Shoals Road just east of Miami Circle at approximately 3 p.m. on May 10. 

Investigators say 16 year old Ashley Johnson was driving a 1998 BMW and was traveling east on Long Shoals Road when it crossed the center line and struck a 2005 Ford truck head-on. The truck, owned by MB Haynes Electric, was traveling west and was driven by Randy James

Ashley was airlifted to Mission HospitalJames was also transported to Mission Hospital

Investigators say reconstruction efforts have been hampered due to rain in the area as they continue to piece together what happened.
