A few hundred people were on hand Friday evening at the Statehouse to watch former Alaska Gov. and Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin endorse Nikki Haley in the governor’s race.
The Lexington Rep. also spent the day campaigning with former South Carolina first lady Jenny Sanford.
“It’s pretty cool when you start the day with Jenny Sanford and you finish it with Sarah Palin,” said Haley.
Palin called Haley, who is the only woman in the race, a candidate that she could relate to.
“Nikki, having been there I know your story and I know what you’re going through and that’s why I feel this kindred spirit to her too,” said Palin.
“I know what she’s going through. Nikki Haley in so many ways, kind of too being considered the underdog, but she’s a fighter and she’s a winner.”
Haley is one of four candidates seeking the GOP nomination for governor.
A recent Rasmussen poll showed Haley running fourth behind S.C. Attorney General Henry McMaster, Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer and U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett.
The latest campaign finance reports show that Haley has raised roughly a third of the money that her opponents have available.
However, she has gotten a boost from the conservative group ReformSC which has begun airing ads that feature Haley and one of her key issues, on-the-record voting.
The endorsement from Palin should further help to raise her profile as the June 8 primary nears.
Haley has also been endorsed by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
