Tuesday June 1, 2010, is the first day of Clemson’s new texting and driving ban.
The new law means people caught texting and driving, reading a text or other printed material, be fined $100 plus court costs. There will be no points added to the licenses of those ticketed. There were will a grace period in which warnings will be issued. Clemson Police will hand out brochures, and they have posted signs about the ban at area businesses.
Students at the Clemson University will receive brochures with the city code and statistics when they return from summer break in August.
Police said they’ll be looking for signs similar to DUI to pull people over: crossing the center line, weaving, running off the road, or even looking down. The ordinance does allow officers to look at the time of your most recent text message.
