Gresham Brown – a fourth grade language arts teacher at Stone Academy in Greenville - won the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award.
Brown was surprised to learn of the honor Monday morning and will also claim a $25,000 prize.
The Milken National Educator Awards were created in 1985 to reward, retain and attract top professionals to the nation’s schools.
“We’re honoring an outstanding teacher today, and it’s an incredible thrill to be here and see his shocked expression,” said State Superintendent Jim Rex in a written release.
During his classroom morning meetings, Brown plays the guitar while teaching his students community building songs.
The Department of Education says more than 80 percent of his students meet or exceed expectations on the district’s standardized testing.
Brown holds bachelor of arts and masters degrees from the University of South Carolina.
