Central Police say they have arrested a suspect in the case of a bomb that damaged a car at Cross Creek Apartments Wednesday.
David Scott Peterson is charged with intention to cause explosion and possession of a unlawful weapon. His bond was set for $125,000.
The incident happened just before 9 am, and rocked the Summit at Cross Creek Apartments and nearby police department. Central Police Department is about one block from The Summit at Cross Creek Apartment. Chief Kerry Avery says the "boom" got his attention.
"I had just come back from a meeting," Avery said. "I heard a loud bang and I thought an 18-wheeler or something similar had hit the building."
Once on scene, officers discovered that a bumper form a 2007 Honda Civic had been blown off the vehicle and smoke was coming from the car. The investigation has revealed that an explosive device has been placed underneath the axle of the car and it detonated.
There were no injuries or any secondary explosive devices.
The Anderson County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad, State Law Enforcement Division, ATF and FBI arrived are investigating.
"It smelled like black powder and firecrackers," Avery said. "We are continuing to investigate the incident and develop new leads."
The Chief says its hard to know if the incident was random, but says they're very lucky. "Someone could have been badly hurt."
