Authorities are looking for vandals after getting called to an Upstate church Friday morning.
Firefighters responded to Poplar Springs Baptist Church on SC-417 in Moore around 1:30 Friday morning for a report of smoke.
An incident report from the sheriff's office says when deputies arrived they found smoke in the kitchen. Their investigation revealed that gas stove eyes had been turned on, with the pilot light off. In addition the report says, the griddle and stoves were turned on, with their heat on. Investigators feel this was an apparent attempt to burn the church.
They also say someone threw eggs inside of the church.
Pastor Robert Bevill says he doesn't understand why someone would try to burn down a house of worship. "Well we feel like the church may have exploded in maybe ten minutes thirty minutes who knows." the pastor said.
