For the second time in just a few years, a popular piece of artwork in downtown Greenville has been vandalized. Police believe sometime in the past week, a pair of vandals took a knife to the "string art" display in the Riverplace Office building on Main Street. The building's management commissioned the artwork several years ago, which consists of 4 miles of fishing line, intricately hooked from floor to ceiling.
Surveillance cameras caught a male and female doing the damage, which is estimated at about $2500. "There are eyes in the sky, and they will be caught," says Captain Mike Gambrell.
Just a couple of years ago, teens took a lighter to the artwork, and burned some of the strings. They were eventually caught. Gambrell says "It's there for people to enjoy and when you come down to enjoy it, and there's vandalism such as this, we're going to deal with it."
Back in February, teens targeted another piece of downtown art, by beheading a statue on Main Street.
