The South Carolina Highway Patrol arrested a woman they say hit a pedestrian and did not stop.
Troopers said the driver struck a 55-year-old man who was walking on U.S. 29 between Watson and Rutherford Roads around 10:00 on Sunday night. At 1:10 a.m. Wednesday, investigators arrested 22-year-old Masako Uemura.
Troopers said she was from Canada but was living in Greenville. She is charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in great bodily injury. Investigators have not released information on the victim's condition.
Uemura’s bond was set at $75,000 at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
This marks the third hit-and-run in the Upstate, resulting in serious injury or death, in just the past 3 weeks. Lance Corporal Bill Rhyne with the highway patrol says many times, pedestrians do not know the law.
"They need to realize if they're going to be out on the highway or roadway, they need to walk facing traffic," Rhyne said.
Rhyne says regardless of fault, leaving the scene is still a crime.
"You need to stop, if you hit a pedestrian, you need to stop at the scene," he said.
