A collision killed two women on Highway 11 in Chesnee Tuesday afternoon.
According to Lance Cpl. Bill Rhyne with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident happened at 2:34 p.m. in front of 1458 Highway 11 in Spartanburg County, about 14 miles north of Spartanburg and just west of Chesnee.
Rhyne said that a 2000 Buick Park Avenue was traveling north on Highway 11 when the driver of the vehicle, identified as 68-year old Connie Ruth Duckett, of Chesnee, crossed the center line and struck a 2001 Ford Taurus, which was going south, head-on.
Duckett was wearing a seatbelt and was trapped in the vehicle, but was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the car, an unidentified juvenile, was in a booster seat and wearing a seatbelt and transported to Spartanburg Regional Hospital for non-life threatening injuries, according to Spartanburg County Coroner's Investigator Dwayne Corn.
The driver of the Ford Taurus, identified by Corn as 70-year old Rena Joann McDowell, also of Chesnee, was also wearing a seatbelt and was trapped inside the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the car, an unidentified juvenile, was also in a booster seat and wearing a seatbelt and transported to Spartanburg Regional Hospital for non-life threatening injuries, Corn said.
The accident remains under investigation.
A witness at the scene said she was following one of the cars when the accident happened.
The witness said in the first car, she saw one person was killed, while a child passenger survived. In the second car, she could see another person was killed and a child passenger in that car survived, as well.
The witness says that both cars were coming past a curve near Arrowwood Baptist Church on Highway 11 when they struck head-on.
The witness says it happened in front of a water facility and workers there came and helped the victims of the accident.
