Gary Sease, a CSX Spokesman tells News Channel 7 train that hit Robert Simmons Tuesday morning was traveling from Erwin, Tennessee to Savannah, Georgia.
Sease said the train consisted of two locomotives and 35 cars.
He says the train was a mixed freight with a variety of commodities being transported.
The CSX spokesman says their incident report shows the accident happened around 2:13am, in Woodruff.
The Spartanburg County Coroner's Office says Simmons, 48, of Woodruff died Tuesday morning after he was struck by the train.
Investigators say Simmons left his home on foot around 6:30 pm Monday evening and never returned. He was seen in the area near where the accident happened around 11:15 pm. He was walking on US 221 towards Enoree.
The Coroner’s Office says Simmons was sitting between the rails and did not respond to the locomotive train whistles when the accident happened at 2:20 am.
The Spartanburg County Coroner's Office has planned an autopsy and is waiting on toxicology results.
The operator told authorities the train was passing through en route to Augusta, Georgia, when the conductor thought someone was hit.
The Spartanburg County Coroner's Office confirmed Tuesday that Simmons died from internal injuries caused when he was struck by the train.
The death remains under investigation by both the Sheriff's Office and Coroner's Office pending toxicology results from the South Carolina Law Enfoecement Division.
