The state of South Carolina has $10 million to reduce congestion, in the short term, on I-85 in the Upstate.
Here are some of the ideas the state has for lowering traffic demand on the interstate:
- Asking big businesses to carpool or change hours to ease rush hour
- Introduce rapid transit, like the local bus system or a park and ride program
- Engineers could improve on and off ramps by re-striping the road to allow for more car
- Widening the road to include at least one more lane, which could include the addition of a high occupancy vehicle lane
DOT engineers say some of the smaller fixes could happen within six to ten months.
