On Aug. 19th, 2011 the Asheville Police Department responded to a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian in the roadway in front of the Asheville Mall located at 4 S. Tunnel Rd.
According to the Asheville Police Department two subjects were fleeing from a K-Mart Loss Prevention Officer following a larceny at the store. One of the suspects, Steven Charles Halulko fled down an embankment and was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound on S. Tunnel Road. The other suspect was located by Officers in the area and charged by Baker District personnel.
Halulko was transported to Mission Hospital with life threatening injuries then later died on Aug. 21st.
ADA Hess was contacted and no criminal charges will be filed against the driver of the vehicle which struck Halulko.
