Tension is building in Tripoli as Libyan rebel fighters say they are closing in on Muammar Qaddafi.
Libyan rebels are waging war on die-hard fighters loyal to Muammar Qaddafi. They've surrounded buildings near the colonel's compound. Rebels believe he and his sons are hiding in a hole. One fighter vowed, "we will finish this today."
Some Libyans can't wait for his four decade-long reign to come to an end.
Rebel forces say they have captured the city's airport after an intense gunbattle. They found a multiple rocket launcher on the runway. They say Qaddafi's fighters had aimed it at downtown Tripoli.
NATO is helping in the hunt for the colonel and what's left of his war machine.
British Defense Secretary Liam Fox says, "This was a very brutal and well-supplied regime which is likely to have pockets of resistance continuing for some days yet."
The city's main hospital has been inundated with victims of the violence. It's not just medical supplies they're running short of. They need doctors, and neuro-surgeons. They are working around the clock and saving lives. But not all of them. Many are victims of lethal snipers still holed up in the city.
Rebels say one of their biggest targets now is Qaddafi's hometown of Sirte, which is about 250 miles from Tripoli. They think loyalist fighters are regrouping there for one last stand.
The head of Libya's rebel council says he welcomes negotiations from any of Qaddafi's fighters to avoid more killings.
