The Anderson County Coroner's Office says the driver of a tractor trailer truck fell asleep at the wheel causing a wreck that killed three people and shut down part of 1-85 Saturday.
According to Chief Billy Gibson with Anderson County Fire Department, two people were also air lifted to Greenville Memorial.
Troopers say a tractor trailer driven by 69-year-old Eddie Wyatt, of Rockmart, Ga., was travelling south, when it crossed the median into the north bound lanes and struck another tractor trailer head on. That truck jack-knifed and hit a pick-up truck and an SUV.
The Anderson County Coroner's Office says an autopsy Monday on Wyatt reveals he did not have any health problems. The Coroner's Office believes Wyatt fell asleep at the wheel.
The Anderson County Coroner's Office says Wyatt died on the scene. The driver of the other truck, Clay Johnson, 38 of Charlotte, N.C., also died. The third victim, Jeremy Scott Wilson, 33 of Blacksburg, S.C., was driving the Toyota Tundra involved in the accident. Medics airlifted two other people to Greenville Memorial, who were in the SUV. It was a couple from Simpsonville Chris Schulve is listed in good condition at Greenville Memorial and his wife has already been released.
Chris Schulve released this statement:
“I and my family are grateful for the community’s thoughts and prayers. We want to express our condolences to the families of the other victims of the accident.”
The interstate was closed for most of Saturday afternoon as crews cleared the scene and investigated the crash. Right now, they say they're not sure what caused the driver to cross into oncoming traffic.
According to the Anderson county Coroner’s Office they will perform an autopsy on Eddie Wyatt Monday.
