On October 1, 1999 House Bill 1160 was enacted by the North Carolina General Assembly requiring that all local governments, animal operations, industries and others who operate wastewater collection and handling systems issue a news press release when a spill of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters.
The City of Hendersonville's Wastewater Collection System experienced 10-wastewater spills on Wednesday, March 9th due to excessive rainfall in and around the Hendersonville area of approximately 188,610 gallons.
These spills occurred within the City's sanitary sewer system more particularly described as follows.

4. In the area of the intersection of White Street and Greenville Highway
approximately 4,950 gallons spilled into Mud Creek.
5. In the area of the intersection of Market Street and White Street approximately
15,000 gallons spilled into Mud Creek.
6. In the area of 535 Greenville Highway approximately 3,375 gallons spilled into
Mud Creek.
7. In the area of 402 Caswell Street approximately 13,500 gallons spilled into Mud
Creek.
8. In the area of 416 South King Street approximately 1,725 gallons spilled into Mud
Creek.
9. In the area of Jackson Park Lift Station approximately 39,600 gallons spilled into
a tributary of Bat Fork Creek.
10. In the area of 99 Balfour Road near the Hendersonville Waste Water Treatment Plant approximately 102,600 Gallons spilled into Mud Creek.
The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources' Division of Water Quality was notified of the event on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 and is reviewing the matter.
