An Upstate College is lighting up a campaign against litterbugs.
Greenville Tech, along with Keep Greenville County Beautiful, are tackling cigarette butts that cover the campus.
The college is hoping a $5,000 grand will help snuff out the problem.
The money will be used to buy dozens of cigarette receptacles, litter warning signs and portable pocket ashtrays.
Students will also use GPS to map out litter “hot spots” across the campus.
Organizers say they expect to make a difference.
“A long as we can put the receptacles where students find them the most useful, we feel like that'll address a big part of our problem,” Kathy Ferrell, a program organizer, said.
Students and staff hope to reduce the litter by 30 percent.
The program begins in June.
