Since 2002 this flag has hung outside Linda Davis's Williamston home. Now sun-bleached, she's been eager to replace it. But all upgrades were put on hold when she lost her job a few years back.
"I'm a person who likes to pay her bills and likes to keep them paid and keep them up to date and I just couldn't do it," said Davis.
Foreclosure has been on her mind ever since.
"All I could think about was losing the house."
Court records from Greenville County alone show 200 homeowners a month have lost their house to foreclosure since 2009.
Now some of those people may have hope. Federal regulators are ordering "Independent Foreclosure Reviews" on any cases stemming from 2009 and 2010 involving a list of 14 banks.
Misty Rae with Neighborhood Housing Corporation says thousands of former homeowners may be due compensation for improper foreclosure tactics.
"Some of the things we've heard about are robo-signing or documents not received by the client, or that there was a language barrier. There's multiple things that could have gone wrong," said Rae.
Davis won't qualify for that assistance, but she doesn't need it. She just got word she was approved for financial aid through the SC Help program.
The programs that have made such a difference to people like Davis, were not available during the window of time that is now under review.
"I wish they could have gotten the help that I got," said Davis.
Her flag may be faded, but she's grateful government assistance is helping to keep the American Dream alive, at least for a little longer.
