Greenville Police Chief Terri Wilfong is fielding phone calls from concerned citizens about downtown safety, following a shooting early Sunday morning. It happened at Dixie's Tavern on East North Street around 2:00 a.m. Sunday. "We're not sure what happened," says Wilfong. "Our officers responded, and people were running out of the bar."
Wilfong says an altercation broke out, and one man was shot in the arm. The victim was treated and released from the hospital. Wilfong says he was in the "wrong place at the wrong time."
Investigators released a photo of a person of interest Monday. There is no name given to the man, but police are pleading for the public's help.
Meanwhile, Wilfong says she's received phone calls from concerned residents. "Downtown is safe," she maintains. "There are shootings at schools and churches, and those are safe places. When someone has a gun and a plan, it's going to happen."
Business owner Cody Gurley, who recently opened Palmetto Shades downtown, says he's never felt unsafe. "It's isolated," he says. "It should not deter people from coming downtown." Resident Brad Griffin adds, "I feel safer here than most other places."
Greenville Police detectives continue to investigate leads and information in this case and are asking for anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information to call 271-GCPD or 23-CRIME.
