An Anderson University basketball player died Tuesday morning. Lamar Jack collapsed during basketball practice Friday and had been hospitalized at AnMed Health Medical Center. According to the family, his hospitalization was due to complications of blood clots in the lungs and a pulmonary embolism. The Anderson County coroner will perform an autopsy on Wednesday.
A spokesperson from Anderson Unviersity says Jack was 19-years old and from Piedmont, South Carolina. The school says Jack was a redshirt freshman forward on the AU basketball team.
He was the son of Karen and Patrick Jack of Piedmont.
The following is the statement released by President Evans P. Whitaker to the Anderson campus this morning.
Dear Campus Family:
It is with great sadness that I share with you that our beloved student, Lamar Jack, passed away just a short time ago.
Our hearts ache for Lamar’s parents and sister, and his larger family and circle of close friends.
He was a fine young man, appreciated and loved by many in our campus family, especially his teammates on the Men’s Basketball Team. His death is a great and deeply hurtful loss to our campus.
Lamar knew our Lord and Savior and we are encouraged by the confidence that we will one day see him again.
I want to thank all of you who have wept and prayed for Lamar over the last few days. His family has been aware of your concern and they are very grateful. Your kindness and compassion have made a meaningful difference.
Please continue to lift the family and the basketball team members up to our Lord, asking for His tender mercies upon them in this difficult hour and their challenging journey ahead.
When we know more about plans, we will share that information with you. At the appropriate time, we will call the campus together to honor Lamar’s life and his contributions to our campus.
Faithfully,
Evans P. Whitaker, Ph.D.
President
