Clemson University is looking to build a skilled workforce center to feed the state's thriving automotive and aviation industries.
Along with partners across South Carolina, the school says a $2.3 million grant from the National Science Foundation will help drive the manufacturing training facility.
University officials say these areas are in need of workers with specific skills they intend to create.
“As with the Graduate Automotive Technology Education (GATE) center announced last month in Greenville at the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research, this initiative shows the university is heavily invested in developing next-generation technicians and engineers for the state’s new manufacturing industries,” President James F. Barker says.
Partners of the program include:
- Greenville Technical College for automotive and aviation engineering and virtual school technology;
- Florence-Darlington Technical College for distance learning, industry partnerships for technician education;
- Trident Technical College for aviation manufacturing; and
- Florence-Darlington Technical College to focus on expanding excellence in technician education.
South Carolina is currently struggling with an 11 percent unemployment rate.
