An Upstate teacher has been awarded the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award.
Ninth grade math teacher Jeremy Powell is $25,000 richer thanks to the annual award.
Powell was surprised with the honors Thursday morning at Westside High School.
South Carolina Superintendent of Education Mick Zais was on hand to make the announcement during a student assembly.
“Jeremy has great rapport with his students and believes in them wholeheartedly,” said Westside Principal Henry Adair. “He uses a variety of instructional strategies to ensure that every child gets the individual instruction that they need. The exciting learning environment that he provides motivates students to become life-long learners of mathematics.”
Powell has been with the school for seven years.
The Milken National Educator Award is given to the nation's top teachers and has become highly prestigious over its 25 years.
