Clemson University Trustees approved new concept plans for several student life, academic and athletic facilities on campus.
Those plans include a $123.5 million student housing, retail and activity hub at the east entrance to the campus. The hub will have high quality housing, for Clemson's upper-class and graduate students. It'll also include a student bookstore, casual dining options and other services that serve students and complement local businesses.
Clemson President James F. Barker described the project as a “high-density, high-energy, mixed-use community in a park-like, pedestrian-friendly setting that will offer the academic and social benefits of on-campus housing with amenities and services that support students. This project responds to market demand and provides a level of quality that will help keep us competitive for top students.”
If plans are approved, the project will get underway in 2013. It should open in 2015.
According to Clemson University leaders, trustees also approved new plans for The Watt Family Innovation Center. It's a three-story, 40,000-square-foot facility to be built in the middle of campus near the library.
In January, university officials announced a $5.3 million gift from three generations of the family of alumnus Charles Watt to help fund the building that is intended to be an intellectual center to prepare innovative students to take ideas from concept to the marketplace.
The project, which begins next year, will cost about $16.2 million. The money comes from state institution bonds and private gifts.
The trustees also approved plans to add on to the Memorial Stadium WestZone complex. The “Oculus” will showcase the university's athletic, academic and military heritage.
It features interactive exhibits, a rooftop terrace, a theater and gallery space. Construction is also slated to begin next year. The $15 million price tag will be picked up, by private donations.
