Deputies say the man who reported a police impersonation Friday morning in Chesnee made up the claims.
Barber Dean Smith, 77, of Gaffney has been charged with filing a false report after he told investigators he was handcuffed to his steering wheel and robbed by a police impersonator.
He said he was pulled over on Highway 110 at Piedmont Road by a heavyset man in a black Crown Victoria and robbed of $3,500.
During their investigation, officials found out Smith was having financial problems and was close to being evicted from his home.
Smith confessed to making up the claims around 4:30 p.m.
He is being held at the Cherokee County Detention Center
