The Second Annual “A Hero’s 5K Run & Walk” was held on Saturday at Furman University.
A Hero’s 5K exists to raise awareness of the sacrifices made each day by the United States Military, and to raise money to support the needs of South Carolina servicemen and women and their families. A Hero’s 5K was launched in 2010 by the parents of Greenville native, SPC Geoffrey Whitsitt, who died January 13, 2010, at Combat Outpost McClain, Afghanistan of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. Geoff’s parents reside in Landrum, SC, and his brother, Steven, serves on active duty in the United States Navy.
The Upstate Military Support Coalition (UMSC) is a grassroots organization based in the Upstate region of South Carolina, dedicated to recognizing and caring for our local military personnel who are deployed to a war zone.
