Does the Ove Glove Work?

»  Comments | Post a Comment

If kitchen accidents have left you with battle scars, the Ove Glove may keep you from feeling the heat. It claims to protect you from burning yourself on hot pans, even an open fire. But does it really work?

Walter Gallman is no stranger to the heat.

"You get burned you just keep moving," is his motto.

This cook at Brick Oven in Spartanburg says he gets burned at least once a day.

And he showed us the battle wounds to prove it.

"My arms are just spotted up"

His partner, Kent Elmore is right behind him.

Elmore preps, piles it on, and puts 40 pizza's a day into an oven that can reach 900 degrees.

The two cooks are a perfect pair to help us test out the Ove Glove. the makers claim it's made from flame and heat resistant Nomex and Kevlar.

HEAT TEST:

The commercial says "this tough material resists intense heat up to 540 degrees."

So we set the pizza oven to 540 and Elmore is up first, for with the oven test.

"It's not hot at all," he says after taking out a pan that had been sitting in there for a half hour.

So far so good. But what about the open flame?

OPEN FLAME TEST:

Gallman bravely volunteers. Those flames, pretty intense. but with the Ove Glove, Gallman's hands stay burn free.

"Actually it's working pretty good. It's kind of warm though," he says.

Now, we did notice the glove was singed a bit. Here's what the company told us:

"It is not a permanent protection against fire or heat. for fire protection, we recommend not to hold the ove glove over an open flame for more than 5 seconds."

Gallman wished that warning was on the front of the packaging.

Another minor drawback, the makers of the Ove Glove say one size fits all, but I can tell you if you're petite like me, that claim doesn't always hold true.

The company told us:

"Customers with smaller hands pull the Ove Glove taught over their wrist and arms, giving them more protection."

Overall, the Ove Glove get's a thumbs up from these testers.

The Ove Glove runs about $20 dollars and there are a few different types. If you have small hands it's a good idea to get the ones with the silicone strips that make for a better grip.

The makers of the Ove Glove say over six million of them have been purchased in the US over the past eight years. And the "As Seen On TV" shop in greenville says the product is one of their most popular sellers. The Ove Glove also has a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
