Weekend parking in downtown Greenville's Richardson Street garage will now come at a cost. The city will begin charging drivers a $3.00 flat fee to enter the garage after 9:00 p.m. on weekend nights. Attendants are handing out fliers to notify people of the change, which takes effect Friday, February 10th.
The change comes after discussion from Greenville leaders regarding how to control crime downtown. In November, Armantia Assad Wright was accused of opening fire in Dixie's Tavern, a downtown bar. The shooting injured a man. The incident followed several other cases involving security in the area. At the time, Greenville Mayor Knox White said he and other leaders considered a variety of ideas, that could help. White said charging for certain parking garages could help control crowds. "We need to make public safety job number one," said White.
Other garages, like the West Washington Street location, will remain free on the weekends.
