Cherokee County officials say one person died in a mobile home fire in Blacksburg.
Firefighters from several Upstate departments were called to 346 McSwain Road around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. In a prepared statement, Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller said the investigators are investigating the fire as suspicious after members of the Blacksburg Fire Department found a body inside the home as they were extinguishing the fire.
Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said neighbors reported hearing an explosion and then saw fire coming from the home.
“When the fire was extinguished, the white male victim was found near the rear door of the residence. He appeared to have been on his knees attempting to escape the burning structure,” Fowler said.
The State Law Enforcement Division Arson Investigation Team responded to the scene at the request of the Sheriff's Office. Authorities were still on scene collecting evidence related to the fire late Tuesday afternoon.
Fowler said he is attempting to identify the remains of the person found inside the home.
Antioch, Blacksburg, Buffalo, and Cherokee-Kings Creek fire departments responded.
