Deputies say burglars are targeting homes with children. Anderson County Sheriff John Skipper says at least part of a big burglary ring has been busted up, but Skipper says there may be more burglars out there preying on families with kids in order to steal expensive electronics.
Anderson County resident Jennifer Lawson doesn't hide the fact that she has kids. Lawson says, “We play outside. The kids are outside all the time.”
But when Lawson is not at home, she doesn't want her house to be an easy target for thieves. Lawson explains, “Just to not let it (items) be out there (in the yard, around the house) that they (burglars) know they can come anytime and get it.”
That's why you don't see bikes or toys around Lawson’s house that would let burglars know kids live there. Lawson says, “Burglars are sometimes fairly smart. They try to look and get (items) where they can, I think, sometimes, where they can get the most stuff.”
Anderson County Sheriff John Skipper says lately the thieves have been targeting homes with children because that's where they usually find expensive electronics. The sheriff's office arrested 8 people. Most of the suspects arrested are teenagers. And the sheriff says there may be more people still running free connected to the burglary ring.
Lawson says, “We're at home a lot, and we have an alarm system that's marked clearly in our yard.”
But beyond that, you don't see any children’s window decorations that stand out or car stickers at Lawson’s home. She says, “Family stickers or ‘baby on board,’ nothing like that's on our car.” She also says they keep their cars in the garage.
Deputies say it's a smart move since the latest group of burglars hit up family homes all across the county. Lawson says, “It (the string of burglaries) doesn't necessarily scare you, but you have to take precautions.”
Deputies say the thieves targeted homes with children in at least ten of the fourteen burglaries stealing laptops, video game players, and televisions. The sheriff says there could be more charges and more arrests in the case.
