Cherokee County deputies said they're taking an increase in burglaries very seriously, making themselves visible in the areas hardest hit by crime. But they said people living here need to keep an eye out because every detail helps.
Tonya Harris lives in upper Cherokee County and hasn't had a single good nights sleep since burglars almost broke down her door.
“I was in bed 3:30 or 4 in the morning I heard a big bang like someone had kicked my trailer, someone kicked my door, it vibrated my whole wall,” said Harris.
The two men she said were young, dressed in dark clothing and got away when she called to her neighbor for help. All details she can pass on to deputies.
“They walk like their normally walking down and road and next thing you know they're in your yard,” said Harris.
But they didn't stay gone for long. They were back around again beating on the trailer trying to get in back and front door also.
Harris said so many of her neighbors went through the same thing.
In broad daylight crooks break into their cars parked outside and kick in their front doors when they're at work.
Many were too scared to confront our cameras fearing they could be a target.
But Cherokee County deputies said enough is enough. They've been tracking the crimes with a map updated daily to send deputies to the hot spots.
“We concentrate more deputies in that area using our resources and unmarked patrol cars and off duty patrol cars,” said deputies.
They said more people have moved from the inner city of Gaffney and spread out in the county and with fewer deputies it's difficult to cover this much ground.
“I'm afraid they're going to have a gun, a knife and wind up shooting someone or cutting someone,” said Harris.
Harris has put boards up behind her doors but is begging deputies to catch the crooks soon.
“I want to see them catch them and so we have a piece of mind that were safe...this used to be a safe community,” she said.
So she no longer has to spend her nights peering out the window waiting for the next bold intruder to make a move.
