Mike Williams at the Red Cross in Henderson County is working this Sunday, along with 6 other employees and volunteers, to help anyone who needs a warm place to stay.
Power lines in Henderson and Transylvania Counties were seriously damaged after strong winds knocked them down Saturday. It left thousands without electricity.
So Williams and some other volunteers opened up the Henderson County office offering food, clothing and a shower for anyone who needed it.
"We had some calls coming in from the fire department saying they had people contacting them looking for warmth, looking for showers, looking for facilities because if you have a well you have no water there either," said Williams.
But power outages aren't the only thing the Red Cross sees a lot of during the winter months.
Fires also result from power outages because people use candles to see. Many also start because of space heaters left on or in an innappropriate place.
Williams said it's important to keep batteries, blankets and canned food around the house so you're prepared for an outage.
He said this winter has had mild temperatures compared to other years but that doesn't mean the Red Cross has used less resources.
Fires and power outages happen regardless of the weather Williams insists. He said the bottom line is that the Red Cross just doesn't receive enough donations. When a fire happens the Red Cross doesn't need you to donate clothing or food they need monetary donations.
You can visit www.redcross.org to donate. Williams said when you donate the money will go to an area near you in need.
