Six Greenpeace protesters were arrested in Charlotte Wednesday while the group continued to protest Duke and Progress Energy's use of coal.
Greenpeace officials say the protesters raised a banner in front of the Duke Energy headquarters that read, "Duke Energy: No Dirty Rate Hikes." They were also wearing shirts that said, "Be a good neighbor."
This is part of a continued protest by Greenpeace that included a group of demonstrators climbing a Progress Energy smokestack at an Asheville area power plant earlier this week. The group hung banners from the plant's equipment.
All sixteen protesters were arrested.
Greenpeace is demanding Duke put an end to mountaintop coal removal, provide one third of its energy in the form of renewable energy by 2020, and phase out coal use by 2030.
Progress Energy officials said Monday that the Asheville area facility was the first in the state to install a scrubber to reduce emissions.
"The processes that we use from the mining of coal through the generation of electricity, the storage or reuse of ash by-products, all of those are done in compliance with state and federal agencies and regulations," responds Mike Hughes of Progress Energy.
