An Asheville boy is safe following an AMBER Alert Wednesday.
Officials say the 2-year-old was turned over by a family member and the father who, police say, took the boy is in custody.
Durrell Marquise Norris turned himself into Asheville Police investigators late Wednesday afternoon.
At this point, no additional charges are expected but Norris does face charges of assault on a female and communicating threats.
Norris is in the Buncombe County Detention Center and will face a judge Thursday morning for a bond hearing.
The child was taken from East Asheville Academy on Beverly Road Wednesday, according to investigators, prompting officials to issue an AMBER Alert.
Lt. Wallace Welch of the Asheville Police Department says the AMBER Alert helped bring in lots of leads.
"As soon as that thing went out, we were getting calls from everywhere, with any number of tips to follow up on, one of which lead to his general location and allowed us to start this process," Lt. Welch explained.
In North Carolina, an AMBER Alert can be issued for anyone 17 years or younger, if that person is believed to have abducted and not taken by a parent unless the child is in danger. Also the person can't be a runaway.
In South Carolina, the guidelines are similar.
