Deputies in Buncombe County say they have a man in custody following an early morning chase that ended with a deputy firing his gun.
The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office says they pulled over a truck earlier in the morning for a routine traffic stop.
Deputies let the driver go on his way, but then saw him speeding less than one hour later.
They tried to make another stop, but the driver started a chase with deputies on I-40 westbound.
Once officials got the driver to pull over, they say he rammed one of the patrol cars. As a result, one deputy fired his gun to stop the suspect, who was later identified as 17-year old Jacob Plemons.
Plemons, of Fannin, GA, was taken into custody and then to the hospital for treatment.
Officials say he was shot once in the leg and elbow and had to undergo two surgeries and they expect more.
Plemons will be charged with felony to elude arrest and felony to assault with a deadly weapon.
The officer involved, who remains unnamed, has been placed on administrative leave with pay.
The investigation continues.
