Tom Fisher knows all about squirrels. "They're pests really," says Fisher. On his massive peach orchard, Fisher has seen plenty of the critters roaming around, mainly creating havoc around his pecan trees. "I haven't seen anything that squirrels like more than pecans," he says.
Since Fisher lives just outside city limits, he can use something to alleviate his problem: a shotgun. "Nothing works quite that well," he jokes. "I'm a pretty good shot."
City leaders are now considering extending the same rights to residents within city limits. A current city ordinance prohibits firing a gun in the city, except for a wild dog, or other animal that threaten's someone's safety. Squirrels are not included. "We had one resident come to us, and they're ruining his pecan crop," says council member Judy Albert. "We want to consider that, but safety is also a big concern."
