A woman is facing several charges in relation to a fatal wreck in Asheville in January.
Sergeant Ernie Welborn of the Asheville Police Department said that Sarah Elizabeth Morris, 27, of Leicester, surrendered to authorities Monday afternoon, just one month after a wreck on I-240 claimed the life of a passenger in her vehicle. Morris was charged with felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired and driving without insurance.
According to a police report obtained from the Asheville Police Department, Morris was driving a 2011 Hyundai on Interstate 240 at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. The report states that Morris entered a curve on a off ramp at a high rate of speed and ran off the right side of the road and into a median. The vehicle then went airborne, overturned and struck several trees.
A passenger in the car, Michelle Dawn Crabtree, 30, of Asheville, was pronounced dead at the scene. The report states that police officers found a marijuana pipe in Morris' purse and smelled alcohol on her. Morris submitted to a blood-alcohol test at the hospital and the sample was sent off to the State Bureau of Investigation lab in Raleigh where results are pending.
Morris was released on a $2,000 bond and was given a written promise to appear on the driving while impaired and driving without insurance charges. Her first court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday.
